We Keep Looking for the Big Moments

We Keep Looking for the Big Moments

We Keep Looking for the Big Moments

I spent years waiting for life to begin. I never considered that it might have already been happening.

I spent years waiting for life to begin. I never considered that it might have already been happening.

Kenzie Bauer

About 5 minutes

I used to think life would eventually arrive.

I thought there would be some finish line where everything finally made sense.

When the kids were older.

When work slowed down.

When I had more money.

When I finally figured myself out.

I kept waiting for a life that always seemed just over the next hill.

The strange thing is...

It never showed up.

Not because life disappointed me.

Because it had been here the whole time.

We assume meaning arrives with milestones achieved.

But most of the time, it arrives while we’re making breakfast.

It shows up while the dog follows us from room to room.

While we’re pulling weeds.

While we’re folding another basket of laundry.

While the coffee is still warm.

While our son tells us a story we’ve already heard three times.

These moments don’t announce themselves.

They don’t feel important while they’re happening.

They certainly don’t look like the kind of memories we’ll carry for decades.

And yet...

Years later, these are often the moments we miss.

Not the promotion.

Not the perfectly planned vacation.

Not the day everything finally came together.

We’ll miss the ordinary Tuesday.

The familiar sound of the back door opening.

The morning light across the kitchen floor.

The way the birds gathered in the yard before anyone else was awake.

I don’t think a meaningful life is something we build after we’ve accomplished enough.

I think it’s something we’re quietly living while we’re busy trying to get somewhere else.

Maybe that’s why this little phrase keeps following me around.

Feed the birds first.

It’s never really been about birds.

It’s a reminder to notice what is already asking for my attention before the world convinces me that something bigger is waiting.

Because someday, this ordinary morning will have been the good old days.

And I don’t want to discover that after it’s gone.

Before you go…

Before you go…

Thank you for spending a few quiet minutes here. I hope you notice something beautiful today.

Thank you for spending a few quiet minutes here. I hope you notice something beautiful today.

Thank you for spending a few quiet minutes here. I hope you notice something beautiful today.

Sunday Morning

A quiet note for the beginning of the week. One reflection, sent slowly.
